Her grandfather foretold of a time when her music and programs would be performed professionally before many. She is now living the fulfillment of that prophecy. This month Jenny Phillips took time out of her busy life as a wife, mother, and professional to answer a few questions. BELLA: Please share with us a little about yourself. JENNY: I spent the first ten years of my life in a tiny town in California.
It was there that my love of music, and especially religious music, began. One day, my mom brought me home two tapes of church music. I listened to those tapes over and over again, and sang along until the tapes wore out. I knew then that I wanted to sing religious music. Even at a young age, I felt the power that music had, and I wanted to use that power to help other people feel what I felt about the gospel of Jesus Christ. I moved to Utah when I was ten and have lived there since. I attended Brigham Young University, and after I graduated, released my first album of religious music.

I am now finishing the writing for my 4th album. BELLA: What inspired you to bring about your latest project? JENNY: My latest project, Parables, was inspired by a painting.
I walked into an art studio one day and saw a painting titled Parables by James Christensen. Its a painting that portrays 1. Parables in one scene.
I fell in love with the picture and started to think about doing a musical presentation on the Parables. So I began to study the Parables and quickly became amazed. Most of the Parables I had heard my whole life, but once I really studied them, I realized how important the messages in the Parables were for our day. I wanted to share these messages through a musical presentation.
I ended up being lucky enough to use James Christensens painting for the cover art of the album. BELLA: How did the fireside evolve? JENNY: I held auditions and found some incredible singers to join me in doing a fireside for Parables. We began performing and very quickly the presentation snowballed into a very popular program. In 2. 00. 3, we will do more than 1. BELLA: Please share with us your reasons for doing what you do.
JENNY: Performing Parables is the reward I get for all the work that went into it. I love to share my feelings about the gospel through music. Music can reach into our hearts in a way that other things cant.
I hope that those who see the presentation come away with a stronger desire to live better lives and have a closer relationship with Christ. BELLA: What is your musical background? JENNY: I come from a family that is very unmusical. But I had parents that were very supportive of my desire to sing and write.
I took voice lessons from some of the most renowned voice teachers in the country. I took music theory and songwriting at BYU, and I took private composition lessons. I wrote my first song at age 1. Eleven years later, I was running a very successful vocal studio and released my first album of original music. BELLA: Describe your creative process. JENNY: Sometimes music comes very quickly, and other times it takes a lot of time and hard work.
I almost always write the music and the lyrics at the same time, they always seem too connected to me to do them separately. When I have something I want to say or something that I feel strongly about, the music seems to come easier.
BELLA: What is your greatest desire as a Latter- day Saint woman? JENNY: My greatest desire as a Latter- day Saint woman is to share the knowledge and love of the gospel that I have. First to my children, and then to others.
BELLA: What is your goal as a wife and a mother? JENNY: I feel that being a successful wife and mother is more important than any other success I could obtain. I want to help mold my childrens lives so that they may find happiness in being honest, charitable, and Christ- like people.
BELLA: What has been your biggest challenge as a mother? How have you solved that? JENNY: My music takes up a huge portion of my time.
I have had to find creative ways to balance my music with being a mother. In order to pursue my dream of music and be a full- time mother, Ive had to make a lot of sacrifices. I get up early in the morning before my children are awake to write and read my scriptures, and I work late at night when theyre in bed. I clean my house and do aerobics at the same time in order to have extra time with my kids.
I write lyrics in my head while Im driving around doing errands. I work while my children nap.
All these things add up, and, with a lot of hard work, I find I am able to be a mom all day and get all the music stuff done that I need to. BELLA: Do you have a favorite scripture?
If so, will you share it? JENNY: One of my favorite scriptures is found in Ether 1. And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.BELLA: What do you feel is the greatest threat to our families today? In your opinion, how do we deal with it as Latter- day Saints? JENNY: I believe the greatest threat to our families today is selfishness. Great is the woman whose unselfishness leads her to mold and shape the lives of her children with the love of a mother, even though that means sacrificing many worldly things.
Great is the man and woman whose unselfishness causes them to be committed to a marriage and family, even through hard times. Great are the people who dont risk bringing children into the world who would come into a situation without a married mother and father.
